From: "Steven M. Bellovin" <smb@cs.columbia.edu> Subject: Re: [IP] Congressional streams mirroredThe issue of C-Span videos is more complex than it would seem. Per anarticle in today's NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/26/technology/26cspan.html? ref=washington) some C-Span videos are copyrighted and not freely postable on the Net by others.
I think Speaker Pelosi should have asserted fair use on her use of C-SPAN material. And, I think C-SPAN is wrong to keep this particular material out of the public domain. Yes, they have a business to run, but they've already been well paid for the service they provide and keeping congressional hearings under lock and key is not in keeping with C-SPAN's charter as a public charity. Here's a letter to Brian Lamb on that topic ... http://public.resource.org/dear_brian.html Carl -------------------------------------------
