This is fascinating because a patent claim is being asserted as a key to tying new services into a business monopoly by a regulated monopoly. Verizon is still a regulated entity in each state with special monopoly rights. Combining that with patent rights is against the spirit that led to Carterfone - the ability to block innovation that builds on Verizon's network.

Tying is a serious violation of antitrust provisions. Any lawyers out there wanting to make their bones?
