Subject: [IP] Re: Ordinary People labelled as terrorists
Begin forwarded message: From: jm4fral4@att.net Date: March 28, 2007 10:01:42 AM EDT To: dave@farber.net Subject: To Dave Farber Re: Ordinary People labelled as terrorists Dear Dave:Reminded by this that Andre Schiffrin, founder of the not-for- profit The New Press, is out with new book, A Political Education: Coming of Age in Paris and NY, in part about how the cold war and McCarthy shaped the the nation and publishing industry (in the direction of consolidation and largely current conglomerate ownership). In a radio interview this morning (last qtr of hr on democracynow.org), he mentions that Harvard and Yale had fulltime FBI offices in the early 50s...
Schiffrin, when told to cut 2/3 of his Pantheon list 15 years ago, because the quality was too high and the politics too leftwing (Chomsky, Studs Terkle - himself [ST] previously forced off the air when he had Chicago radio show with Marian Anderson - et al.), he [Schiffrin] left Pantheon/RCA (new owner Si Newhouse) and founded TNP, and all but 2 of his 100s of authors went with him and the whole editorial staff (6 in all) to start The New Press, now celebrating 15th solvent anniversary.
Best, Jacqueline Fralley -------------------------------------------
