Dave,
     An easy read that gives a good feel for the Deism of the  
Founding Fathers is The World of Thomas Jefferson by Daniel Boorstin,  
the former Librarian of Congress.  Jefferson viewed God like a  
watchmaker who wound up the world and let it run.  His carrying his  
logic to logical extremes led to some interesting beliefs such as  
each continent being stocked with the same plants and animalls.
