Dave,

At least for now, the closed (by plan, anyway) ecosystem of Apple's
iPhone makes the relatively open applications environment of Windows
Media (WM) phones all the more attractive -- and there have been
zero cases I'm aware of where the carriers have had the kind of
problems with WM phones that Jobs' keeps alluding to.

But when you think about it, this dichotomy actually shouldn't be
surprising.  Apple has always been a control freak when it comes to
their hardware -- compare that with the almost limitless array of
hardware that runs Microsoft operating system software -- and
associated product pricing.

Say whatever negatives you will about Microsoft (and there's plenty
to say!) but iPhone vs. WM is an obvious case where Microsoft's
environment is clearly far more consumer friendly.
