Subject: [E-PRV] Congress presses eBay to gather more data on sellers, goods

When I was at eBay a couple weeks ago, they were very upset about this trend. Yet another front in the war on secondary markets. Retailers claim this data retention requirement is about stopping crime, but it's really about policing the distribution chain by punishing rogue distributors who sell into the secondary market.

CONGRESS PRESSURED TO REQUIRE EBAY TO POST SERIAL NUMBERS
Retailers and police called on Congress on Thursday to
require online auction sites such as eBay to post the serial
numbers of items for sale to help crack down on gangs of
professional shoplifters. The Internet auction sites should
also provide more information about high-volume sellers of
goods, they said.
