Alternately, we might suggest that this is a company who is only looking to increase their profit margins. Either of those scenarios causes me to question what prevents a monopoly from wreaking havoc on our society when they focus on short term profit and throw our future to the wolves. Looking back, if bitcaps had become the standard billing practice back in the days of dialup, what kind of Internet would we be interacting with now? Would streaming video have ever made it into the mainstream? Would IPTV have ever become a part of our vocabulary? Would web pages have evolved into the graphic intensive experience we all take for granted today? One has to question the wisdom of putting a for profit company in charge of our communications infrastructure when this service is the foundation of our economy.
