Here's more from Cuil's "Our Philosophy" page (<http://www.cuil.com/info/our_philosophy/ >) -- Cuil analyzes the Web, not its users Privacy is a hot topic these days, and we want you to feel totally comfortable using our service. Because Cuil analyzes Web pages and not click-throughs, we don’t need to know your search history and habits. So our privacy policy is very simple: when you search with Cuil, we do not collect any personally identifiable information, period. We have no idea who sends queries: not by name, not by IP address, and not by cookie. Your search history is your business, not ours. We don’t need to keep logs of our users’ search activity, so we don’t. For further details, read our Privacy Policy. Don’t worry, it’s short and to the point. No legal mumbo-jumbo. -- This is particularly interesting since all the other major search providers insist retaining detailed user logs is necessary for both business model, efficiency, and legal reasons (see, for example, <http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/why-does-google-remember-information.html >) Will this change once Cuil (presumably) starts serving ads? -mz -- Michael Zimmer, PhD Assistant Professor, School of Information Studies Associate, Center for Information Policy Research University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee e: zimmerm@uwm.edu w: www.michaelzimmer.org On Jul 28, 2008, at 11:58 AM, David Farber wrote: > > ________________________________________ > From: Jonathan Smith [jms@cis.upenn.edu] > Sent: Monday, July 28, 2008 11:42 AM > To: David Farber > Subject: http://www.cuil.com/info/privacy/ > > Interesting stance..... > -JMS > > > > > > ------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------
