Subject: [IP] Short: DSL and Cable 5 gig caps in Rochester
Now if the FCC/FTC wanted to do some good, this is a real target ________________________________________ From: Dave Burstein [daveb@dslprime.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 2008 11:26 AM To: David Farber Subject: Short: DSL and Cable 5 gig caps in Rochester Dave Frontier/Citizens, the telco in Rochester New York, has just imposed a 5 gigabit cap. (DSl Reports story, checked with the company by me.) Their competition is Time Warner, also working on caps. This is 2 HD movies a month. Your readers can decide whether that's an attempt to prevent people watching ESPN direct from Disney or The Jerusalem Post/Al-jeezera instead of Time Warner's CNN. My take is there's nothing wrong with a bandwidth cap/charge if it has something to do with the cost of the service. A large carrier's costs are 4-7 U.S. cents per gigabyte, dropping so I believe Comcast's proposed 250 gigabyte cap has a basis. I think a cap this low is about competition, not the costs of bandwidth. Dave Burstein Editor, DSL Prime -------------------------------------------
