Dave:

Perhaps your list would be interested in one person’s perspective on Phil Reitinger.

I worked with Phil extensively when he was a senior lawyer in the Computer Crimes part of Justice in the late 90s.  I was working at OMB on privacy issues, and we met intensively on a variety of projects, including on a legislative proposal on how to update the surveillance laws for the Internet age.  I have seen Phil less regularly since, but have spoken with him in some depth on his computer security work at Microsoft.

Based on this experience, I think Phil is an outstanding choice.  He has depth on many relevant aspects of the challenge: law enforcement; national security; a major company’s infosec’s efforts (and Microsoft has invested heavily in the area in recent years); inter-agency experience in government; public-private partnerships; and a very solid technical capability (far more than most lawyers).  Also, partly through having to sit through meetings that I was at in government, he is very well-versed in the privacy and civil liberties issues.

Many of your readers may not have met Phil.  But I think he has great experience and abilities to bring to his new job at DHS.

Peter
