This is classic spam using a fake from address. This is one of the serious problems with today's mail programs -- they don't show the path the message took. There is a design flaw in SMTP in that it doesn't require providing the envelope information though usually you can find it in the "received " field in the header. There are also variants such as fake bounces.
We do need a better messaging system but that's another topic ...
