Subject: [IP] Student sues Amazon after Kindle eats his homework
Begin forwarded message: From: Peter Bachman <peterb@cequs.com> Date: August 2, 2009 12:32:29 PM EDT To: David Farber <dave@farber.net> Subject: Student sues Amazon after Kindle eats his homework Dear Dave, According to the terms of service, Amazon was required to maintain Justin Gawronski's work product regardless of their actions in removing 1984. That alone would give Justin a fairly good reason to sue. However, according to the The Register, the notes were not actually destroyed as they were kept in a different file. Justin is suing anyway since he feels that the notes have been rendered useless by not having the companion e-text to reference, which is a far more subtle point than Amazon actually deleting Justin's notes. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/31/amazon_sued_over_orwellian_moment/ "And if it is necessary to rearrange one's memories or to tamper with written records, then it is necessary to forget that one has done so."
