Subject: bit.ly vs. China?

I seem unable to expand tiny URLs (bit.ly at least) while in China unless I’m VPNed into my house. Unlike last year, though, I can go to my home system directly.

I wonder if bit.ly is being blocked or something else is going on.

Whatever the reason this highlights the problem of taking the entire Internet (or at least a significant portion) and forcing it past a point of (unnecessary) vulnerability.
