Hi
Dave,
Just to note a bit of a milestone - 15
years ago today the NSFNET backbone was decommissioned, in favor of the
current system of commercial backbones, peering, and Internet exchange
points (starting with the original four NAPs). Amazing to think of
the changes in terms of capacity (I think the NSFNET was a T3), traffic
volumes (YouTube is only about 5 years old), and the changing players and
business models (think UUNet, PSINet). The one constant through all
of this change is that the unregulated model of interconnection still
works well and has adapted to all of these changes - could anyone have
foreseen all of these changes and how the system would evolve?
I am sure that lots of IP readers
have first-hand memories of the environment 15 years ago, which would be
great to hear (my first involvement was at the FCC when I benefitted from
many interesting discussions with you about the mergers at the
time).
Thanks |
